Is the Maldives Really Expensive? Your Budget Breakdown

Guesthouses, local ferries, and the best-value atolls — the Maldives doesn't have to cost a fortune.

The Maldives has a reputation as one of the world's most expensive destinations — and in some parts, it absolutely is. A private-island resort can easily cost $1,500 per night. But here's what most travel articles don't tell you: there's a parallel Maldives that's accessible, beautiful, and remarkably affordable.

The Local Island Option

The 2010 law change that allowed tourism on local inhabited islands opened up a completely different way to experience the Maldives. Guesthouses on islands like Maafushi, Dhiffushi, Ukulhas, and Fulidhoo offer clean, comfortable rooms from $50–120 per night.

Getting Around

Inter-island public ferries are cheap (often under $5) and run on regular schedules. Speedboat transfers are faster but cost $50–200 each way. Planning your route efficiently and using the ferry network dramatically reduces costs.

What You'll Actually Spend

On a budget Maldives trip, expect to pay: $70–100/night for a guesthouse, $5–10 for local meals, $30–50 for snorkelling excursions, and $5 for a public ferry. A week in the Maldives on local islands can come in at $1,200–1,500 per person all-in.
